Obverse: Depicts the definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II (whose reign was from February 1952 until September 2022).
Reverse: Features a classic design of the rendition of St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci.
Sovereign coins are backed by the British government and have an interesting history rooted in 1817 as part of the Great Recoinage. In fact it was reborn in 1817, a couple of years after Napoleon's and his Grand Army were defeated at Waterloo. Prior to that there was an English Gold Sovereign coin in use from 1489 until 1603.
